Community Engagement: Connecting With Houston 01.29.2019/Insights Connecting to local markets is important for a real estate investment firm like Parkway. It helps us keep a finger on the pulse of submarkets across the Sun Belt, understand community needs, and identify ways to drive local economies. Through strategic investments, we strive to make a positive and profound difference in the communities where we operate. In fact, we provide each employee one paid day per year for volunteer activities and encourage our staff to become involved in their communities, join professional organizations, and engage in community service to make a real and measurable difference. In 2017, we hosted or promoted events and campaigns aimed at improving the local community in the City of Houston and beyond. Gulf Coast Regional Blood Drive In early 2017, all properties in Parkway’s Houston portfolio participated in the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Drive. In addition to helping save up to three lives, blood donors received many benefits including a mini-physical exam at the time of their donation (including the determination of hemoglobin levels, blood pressure, temperature, blood type, and various blood screening tests). Textile Recycling Campaign In April 2017, Parkway sponsored a textile recycling drive at multiple properties during Earth Week. Altogether, Parkway employees and tenants collected 285 pounds of gently used, unwanted clothing, shoes, toys, and household items destined for reuse in the growing second-hand clothing market, or for use in other post-consumer recycling purposes, such as upholstery and automotive stuffing or industrial wiping rags. In just one week, Parkway employees and tenants collected 1,357 pounds of canned food to support local families in need. School Supply Drive In July 2017, Parkway sponsored a school supply drive benefiting the Houston Independent School District. In one week, Parkway employees and tenants filled over twenty 55-gallon containers with school supplies to support local schools. Toy Drive for DePelchin Children’s Center Parkway employees and tenants in Houston participated in a holiday toy drive for the DePelchin Children’s Center, a local nonprofit organization offering emergency shelter, adoption, foster care, and mental health services for children and families in need in Houston. In one week, Parkway collected over 1,300 toys for DePelchin Children’s Center in Houston. It took five Parkway vehicles to deliver the collected toys. Rebuilding Together Houston Each year, Parkway’s Houston team participates in the Rebuilding Together Houston campaign to support local families that need help with basic home improvements. In April 2017, the team completed basic repairs such as exterior house painting, fixing torn screens, replacing outside porch lighting, and landscaping. It was a rewarding experience, and the families were grateful for our assistance. To learn more about this local home restoration program, visit www.rebuildinghouston.org.
